In Sanskrit, which refers to the sacred language of Hinduism and of historical texts of Buddhism and Jainism, the word “chakra” means “disk” or “wheel” and refers to the energy centers in the body. These wheels or disks of spinning energy each correspond to certain nerve bundles and major organs. There are seven major chakras, each in a specific location along the spine. They start at the root, or base, of the spine and extend to the crown of the head.
Each chakra has a specific color associated with it, and these always appear in a specific order — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet– and these seven chakra colors also appear in the same order within the energetic body. This color arrangement is known as the spectrum of white light or visible light, and it ranges from 700 nanometers (dark red color) to 400 nanometers (violet color). The wavelength of each color is different — the longest wavelength is red, and the shortest wavelength is violet – and the speed of each spinning chakra correlates with these wavelength frequencies: the root chakra spins at the lowest speed, and the crown chakra vibrates at the highest frequency.

Crown Chakra
The crown chakra, or Sahasrara, is located at the top of the head — the crown chakra represents a spiritual connection to ourselves, others, and the universe. It also plays a role in our life’s purpose.
The color associated with the crown chakra is violet, which has the highest vibrational frequency in the entire spectrum of colors. Violet is a color of spirituality, reflection, and self-awareness. An aura of violet indicates a high level of curiosity, interest, and a desire to search for answers to various life problems to pursue the right path. Violet gives an inward feeling of unity, integrity, and wholeness.
White is another color that is often associated with the crown chakra. White represents purity, perfection, innocence, and new beginnings. It encourages us to remain calm, focused, and to keep the mind open.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the crown chakra are amethyst, amethyst quartz, ametrine, crystal quartz, labradorite, lepidolite, moonstone, and selenite.
Third Eye Chakra
The third eye chakra, or Ajna, is located between the eyes — this chakra provides a strong gut instinct, because the third eye is responsible for intuition. It’s also linked to imagination.
The main color of the third eye chakra is indigo (a combination of blue and violet), also known as royal blue. The violet in indigo contributes to awareness, spirituality, wisdom, and connection with the Higher Self; the blue color assists with communication, creativity, purification, and authenticity. Indigo is considered a color of integrity, harmony, deep inner awareness, and wisdom. People who emit lots of indigo from their auric field tend to possess natural psychic gifts, experience vivid lucid dreams, and sense things before they happen. Indigo can put the mind in a concentrated and focused state — it allows increased awareness and insight. Working with indigo allows us to sharpen our minds and to increase emphasis on spiritual issues.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the third eye chakra are azurite, dumortierite, fluorite, iolite, labradorite, lapis lazuli, sapphire, and sodalite.
Throat Chakra
The throat chakra, or Vishuddha, is located in the throat — this chakra has to do with our ability to communicate verbally.
The color blue represents freedom, purity, loyalty, imagination, clarity, confidence, and trust. Blue is regarded to be a color of the spirit, and it’s believed to have a beneficial impact on the body and mind. The color blue is also cooling in nature, and it allows us to feel calmer, more peaceful, and balanced whenever we express ourselves. The element associated with the throat chakra is space, and the biggest open spaces on our planet (sky and sea) are blue.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the throat chakra are angelite, apatite, aquamarine, azurite, blue howlite, blue lace agate, chrysocolla, kyanite, and turquoise.
Heart Chakra
The heart chakra, or Anahata, is located near the heart, in the center of the chest. It comes as no surprise that the heart chakra is all about our ability to love and show compassion.
Green is a naturally calming and soothing color, as it encourages a general sense of harmony and balance. Green is also associated with feelings of peace, compassion, kindness, and love. The dynamic energy of green (observed specifically during a spring season) represents growth, expansion, and openness. The abundance of green can be found anywhere in nature, so one of the best things we can do for the heart chakra is to spend some time outside in nature.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the heart chakra are amazonite, green agate, green jade, green opal, malachite, rhodochrosite, rhodonite, and rose quartz.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The solar plexus chakra, or Manipura, is located in the stomach area — it’s responsible for confidence and self-esteem, as well as helping us to feel in control of our lives.
The color yellow is associated with the energy of fire, which can break down other elements. Yellow is also the color of the sun, the main source of heat and energy for our solar system. The solar plexus governs digestion and metabolism and has the same purpose for the body as the sun has for earth, supplying our bodies with energy and fuel for all biological processes. Yellow is a color of joy, happiness, optimism, and increased mental activity and is often used in chromotherapy as a stimulating color for patients with eating disorders and anorexia to activate their metabolism. Yellow is also the most visible color of the entire spectrum and is often used on warning signs.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the solar plexus chakra are amber, carnelian, citrine, fire opal, heliolite, pyrite, rutilated quartz, tiger’s eye, topaz, and yellow jade.
Sacral Chakra
The sacral chakra, or Svadhisthana, is located just below the navel — this chakra is responsible for sexual and creative energy. It’s also linked to how we relate to our own emotions as well as to the emotions of others.
Orange is a color that can be both exciting and soothing. The color orange combines the physical energy of red with the joy and happiness of yellow. Orange is the color of creativity, success, and it can be associated with delight and ecstasy. Orange is also a color of optimism as it gives us the freedom to be ourselves.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the sacral chakra are amber, citrine, orange calcite, orange carnelian, spessartine garnet, stilbite, and tiger’s eye.
Root Chakra
The root chakra, or Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine — it provides us with a base or foundation for life and helps us feel grounded and able to withstand challenges. The root chakra is responsible for our sense of security and stability.
Red is the color that immediately catches our attention, and it’s very often used to signal alerts and threats. The root chakra is responsible for our survival, and the color red has the ability to bring our attention back to safety. Red is also a color of vitality, strength, power, courage, and self-awareness as it allows us to remain more grounded in the physical body. Red wavelength is dense, and it moves the slowest from all colors, which is a reminder of our connection to the Earth’s energy.
Gemstones and crystals associated with the root chakra are black obsidian, black onyx, bloodstone, garnet, red coral, red jasper, smoky quartz, and tourmaline.
